“She Had to Go”
It’s been a hard luck week.
We’re barely back on our feet.
Losin’ her was still on our minds.
She was five years old.
Her story was just gettin’ told.
She was the apple in both our eyes.
Then the doctor came in.
Said she’s near the end.
We both broke down and cried.
We Might Run. We Might Stay.
We Might Try and Kiss This Heartache Away.
We Might Live. We Might Die.
We Might Not Ever Be Gettin’ On With Our Lives.
And We Might Not Know Why God Told Us ...
She Had To Go.
She might be only a hound.
But she’s our hound we found.
Drippin’ cold outside in the rain.
She lived barely a year.
One day she up and disappeared.
Gone lost and we looked for days.
Then down by the creek.
Both our knees fell weak.
There’s her collar in a shallow grave.
We Might Run. We Might Stay.
We Might Try and Kiss This Heartache Away.
We Might Live. We Might Die.
We Might Not Ever Be Gettin’ On With Our Lives.
And We Might Not Know Why God Told Us ...
She Had To Go.
This was my last straw.
Lord knows I gave her my all.
From her wedding to the front porch swing.
We had it all to ourselves.
We only drank top shelf.
Answered prayers was the blessings God brings.
Married 50 plus years.
Always was my worst fear.
Just happened so I’m here to sing.
I Might Run. I Might Stay.
I Might Reminisce This Heartache Away.
I Might Live. I Might Die.
I Might Not Ever Be Gettin’ On With My Life.
And I Might Not Know Why God Told Me ...
She Had To Go.
