“On Her Field of Play”
Yesterday the clouds departed.
It was early, I was just getting started.
I had two more loads for the old junk yard.
By the end of day, my phone started ringing.
It was her but she wasn’t singing.
She said, “Take a seat this is gonna be hard!”
I’ve been thinkin’ about us.
Over the past five or six months.
And it’s best I let you know.
You’re the star in another show.
I Guess I Didn’t Win the Game.
I Guess I’m Not Taken the Trophy Home.
Right Now I’m Not Living the Life that God Provided,
In My Dreams When I’m Alone.
God I Wanna Thank You for Letting Me Stay,
On Her Field of Play.
Restless sleep I wake alone.
Stumbled ‘round, felt for my phone.
I eyed the cupboard for food but it was bare.
I gave a call to my job, said I’ll be running late.
Wiped my eyes as the radio played.
I thought, “Am I a gambler with no chips to spare?”
I’ve been thinkin’ about us.
Over the past five or six months.
And it’s best you let me know.
You’re the star in another show.
I Guess I Didn’t Win the Game.
I Guess I’m Not Taken the Trophy Home.
Right Now I’m Not Living the Life that God Provided,
In My Dreams When I’m Alone.
Look What’s In Front of Me Now.
It’s Not Just a Memory from Another Day.
I Tell You Tonight I’m Holding Tight the Light,
That Helped Her Find Her Way.
God I Wanna Thank You for Letting Me Stay,
On Her Field of Play.
I slumped over as I held my head.
I thought out loud, “Is this the end?”
Then I heard some foot steps on my front porch.
The ding dong bell woke up my dogs.
I peek-a-boo'd my mind went fog.
She was standin' there flamin’ hot as a torch.
She said, “I’ve been thinkin’ of this place.
Over the past five or six days.
And it’s best if you let me know.
If I’m the star in your life long show”.
It Looks Like I Won the Game.
It Looks Like I’m Taking the Trophy Home.
Right Now I’m Living the Life that God Provided,
In My Dreams When I’m Alone.
